The Fedorin Cup

I got to go to the Fedorin cup today.  It was a lot of fun as Pronger, Marchant, Bobby Ryan, Todd Bertuzzi and Newll Brown were there. Teemu was an unfortunate no show to the game.  Team USA won in a shootout.  The game tied 11-11 at the end of regular time.  It was a low penalty low call game and was a lot of fun.  I took pictures and some video and posted them at my Flickr and Youtube accounts.

Here is a sampling:

Saturday News

I got to go to the Fedorin cup today and that was a lot of fun.  I will post pictures and vids in another post.  In the mean time I found some video from Parros's day with the cup and a couple of articles about his visit.

Youtube video of George with the cup

A great article from the Observer-Reporter.com

SCENERY HILL - It has been at the bottom of the swimming pools of Mario Lemieux and Patrick Roy.

It has been to the Kentucky Derby, where winner Go for Gin used it as a feedbag.

It has been lost on occasion, once being left along the side of the road while the hockey players in the car stopped to change a flat tire.

It has been present in numerous bars, including a few in Washington, sat quietly in a bedroom with an amorous couple, held peanuts, oysters and clams for a party, been disassembled and reassembled a few times and has been stolen more than once.

On this hot, summer night, the Stanley Cup was on display near a smoldering pig.

The National Hockey League's most precious and unique trophy was one of about 300 guests at Chuck Wonsettler's farm Friday evening, courtesy of nephew George Parros, who is a member of the Anaheim Ducks. The friends, family and well-wishers were on hand for the pig roast and to toast Parros.

The Star-Ledger also has great coverage

The dented blue trunk looked like a relic from freshman move-ins gone by. It was covered with old airline tags and Transportation Security Administration stickers. As it made its way down the cramped hallway beneath Princeton University's Baker Rink, it was almost impossible to comprehend what was inside, hockey's most prized possession -- the Stanley Cup.

And thanks to Princeton's own George Parros, the Cup came to New Jersey yesterday.

"I kind of had this planned from that start," said Parros, who plays right wing for the NHL champion Anaheim Ducks. "Once I knew I had the chance, I knew I wanted to bring it to Delbarton and Princeton, they're both close to my heart."

As has become tradition, each member of the Stanley Cup-winning team gets to have personal possession of the Cup for one day. Parros, who graduated from Princeton in 2003 and lived in Randolph, spent a few hours chauffeuring the Cup around New Jersey.

The first stop was the Delbarton School in Morristown, where Parros played high school hockey. The Cup was on display for just over an hour for faculty, alumni and some students.

The Daily Record continues with their great photos and article

MORRIS, TWP. -- One of Morris County's most prestigious schools received a visit from a Randolph native and his best friend Friday.

The school: Delbarton.

The man: George Parros, former Delbarton hockey star and current NHL player.

The best friend: Lord Stanley's Cup.

Parros, who won the Stanley Cup this season with the Anaheim Ducks, arrived at 9 a.m. cradling the trophy. For two hours, the self-professed "fighter" acted more like a lover, signing autographs and posing for countless photographs.

Chatham's Mary Chambers and her son, Jack, were just two of the many greeted by Parros. Jack, 8, fully clad in Ducks gear, was "speechless" about the opportunity to meet his hero.

"(Jack) brought his pad, pen, and his hat," Mary said. "He was so excited that he even forgot his jersey and we had to go home and get it."

Delbarton's sophomore goaltender Bobby Kaminski was also excited to meet the Morris County legend, who graduated from the school in 1998. He and his neatly-dressed teammates called winning the Stanley Cup "the ultimate dream."

Anaheim Ducks News - One More Thing

I have had trouble with this accessing this article so I posted the whole thing.  It is about how Bob Murray is interviewing with the Blue Jackets for their GM position.  Here is the article.

Bob Murray, vice president of hockey operations for the Anaheim Ducks, will interview for the Blue Jackets' vacant general manager's post.

The Ducks have granted permission for Blue Jackets president Mike Priest to talk with Murray, but it's unclear when the interview will take place. It could be as soon as this weekend, before the Ducks open the Stanley Cup Finals on Monday against the Ottawa Senators, if Ducks GM Brian Burke gives Murray clearance to leave the club for a couple of days.

Burke did not return calls seeking comment yesterday.

Murray was not with the Ducks yesterday. The club said he would be out of town today as well but did not reveal his whereabouts.

Priest, too, was traveling yesterday. A club spokesman said a meeting between Priest and Murray did not take place yesterday.

Priest might have to wait until the Stanley Cup Finals are completed to meet with Murray, but it seems unlikely they'll wait that long. If the Ducks and Senators play seven games, the Finals will end June 9.

Priest, according to sources, hoped to narrow their field of candidates to three or four finalists by next week, at which point more serious interviews -- quite possibly including majority owner John H. McConnell -- will take place.

A source yesterday confirmed to The Dispatch that Edmonton Oilers assistant general manager Scott Howson was in Columbus last week to interview with Priest.

Former New York Islanders and New York Rangers general manager Neil Smith interviewed earlier in the month.

There have been other interviews, too, but the Blue Jackets have stressed to candidates that they wish to keep the proceedings private.

Anaheim Ducks News - Friday News

TGIF! Not because of the weekend but because the Stanley Cup Journal is updated with Kent Huskins and Joe DiPenta's day with Cup. George Parros had his day with the Cup today and I've got pics. I also have one more article from Ryan Shannon's day with the cup and the Ducks do good in Oxnard.

Stanley Cup Journal was updated today with Joe and Kent's day with the cup.

Joe DiPenta

The second that Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia is mentioned, hockey fans instaneously think of one person - Joe DiPenta, the first player to take the Stanley Cup there when he arrived with hockey's most cherished prize on Thursday, August 9.

Although born in Barrie, Ontario, DiPenta grew up in Cole Harbour and played his first hockey there. When it came time to make his plans for the Stanley Cup, there was no doubt where Joe was going to take it.

Joe fretted for several days, struggling with sleep as he worried about his day with the Cup. "I just worried that something was going to happen, that the flight was delayed or something and the Cup wouldn't show up on time."

All went as planned. The Stanley Cup arrived in Halifax late on Wednesday, August 8. Halifax International Airport is quite a bit north of the Nova Scotia capital, and it took almost half an hour to drive from the airport.

Kent Huskins

Friday, August 10 belonged to Kent Huskins, the Ducks' young rookie defenseman who hails from Almonte, Ontario, a historic town not far from Ottawa. Almonte is best known as the birthplace of James Naismith, the inventor of basketball, but after Kent made his NHL debut with the Ducks this season, Almonte became much more of a hockey town. Kent contributed to Anaheim's Stanley Cup victory over the Senators, much to the dismay of the local fans from Ottawa.

Handed the Stanley Cup at 10:30 that morning, Huskins took the trophy to his parents' home where professional photographs were taken. Kent's mother Bonnie and father Les couldn't have been more excited for their son.

A public celebration was scheduled next, so Kent took Lord Stanley's legacy to an area where a tent had been erected in the field behind Almonte's Civitan Hall. Kent witnessed an incredible turn-out, as he shared the Cup with almost 1,500 fans during the memorable afternoon. While there, Huskins spent time with a local sledge hockey team and a minor hockey team.

George Parros had his day with the Cup today. Here is an article

Former Randolph resident and current NHL defenseman George Parros brought the Stanley Cup to Delbarton this morning, displaying the trophy to old friends, faculty members and current students.

Parros, a former Delbarton hockey star who won the Stanley Cup this past season with the Anaheim Ducks, posed for pictures and signed autographs for two hours at his former alma mater.

Each member of a team that wins a Stanley Cup is given one full day to spend with the trophy and is permitted to with it whatever he wishes. Parros, now 28, made his Delbarton his first stop on a day long journey that includes appearances at Princeton University, from where he graduated in 2003, and in Pennsylvania.

“The best part of this is being able to come back and see people I haven’t seen in a long time,” Parros said. “And to have this with me is something special.”

The Anaheim Ducks do some good:

About a month ago, Oxnard Ice Center President Mike Paikin said the rink was going to close because of financial problems. Paikin of Sherman Oaks suggested then that the clubs could buy the business.

Both groups marshaled forces and surpassed their fundraising goal of $120,000 as of last weekend, Meaney said. Donations came from around the country, including a substantial contribution from the National Hockey League's Anaheim Ducks.

One more Ryan Shannon Article with picture:

DARIEN - Ryan Shannon had a good year.
The 24-year-old Darien native was called up by the NHL's Anaheim Ducks last year Ryan Shannon of the Anaheim Ducks carries the Stanley Cup into the Darien Ice Rink yesterday . . .after an impressive preseason, and he notched 2 goals and 9 assists during the regular season. But that was just the beginning.

"I went from playing in a minor league team, and then, in October, I found myself playing on an NHL team," Shannon said. "That was a dream come true. Then, to score my first NHL goal, that was unbelievable.

"I never thought it would get any better than that," he said.
But it did - Shannon and the Ducks won the Stanley Cup in June, and, as is tradition with NHL champions, each team member was given 24 hours with the storied trophy. Shannon spent his day with Lord Stanley's Cup yesterday.

Anaheim Ducks News -Ryan Shannon Stanley Cup Day

Thanks to the folks at Allducks.com for the heads up on this link to an article on Ryan's day with the cup.

The procession was non-stop, for almost two hours as hockey fans from town and afar flocked to have their picture taken with the Stanley Cup, and to have the man who won it with the Anaheim Ducks last season, sign sticks and shirts, and just about anything else.

It all happened at the Darien Ice Rink beginning at 10:30 a.m. on Aug. 23, when Ryan Shannon, 24 of Darien, arrived and raised the famous trophy before a group of hundreds lined up to enter the rink for the event, and then headed inside to get it all started, in what was an electric, if understated moment marked by the humble NHL pro.

From there, it was smiles — miles of smiles it seemed — all around, with the throngs winding their way from the front doors, looped around the rink on the outside, and back into the rink out on to the ice where the Cup and Shannon were set up. It was a marathon signing ceremony put on by Darien’s one and only Cup winner ever, and only third Cup winner in the state all time.

Wednesday News

So preseason tickets are going on sell August 25.  Will you be going?  Earl at BOC has a sneak peek at the next Ducks logo (very funny) and some pics of Tim Clarks's Stanley Cup party.

Preseason tickets will be available soon.

Individual tickets for the Ducks' four preseason home games will go on sale this Saturday, August 25 at 10 a.m.

Earl at BOC has an idea of what he thinks the new Ducks logo should be:

I must admit, I was pretty inspired by Pfizer's mother-of-all-Canucks-logos (happy birthday, Alanah!); it really got me to thinking--shouldn't the Ducks get back to the logo game? If you recall, last summer the Ducks introduced their new look uniforms, featuring a webbed-foot text which was at least successful in reminding absolutely nobody of Disney, but still it lacked a true logo. Instead of a picture of an actual duck, we instead were treated with forensic evidence that suggests that duck-like creatures may have once inhabited the earth.

Anyway, now that the team has divorced itself from the Disney movie, I can't really say what association the team or the city of Anaheim has with actual ducks. But with the right logo, maybe we could re-associate the team name with the actual identity of the team--we could stop pretending that “Duck” refers to some animal, and instead acknowledge that it better reflects an appropriate action to take when May, Bertuzzi, or Pronger is skating up to you.

Tuesday News - Niedermeyer & Selanne Retirement Update

Well it was a news filled day.  I've got a small update from a reliable source on the retirement watch. I have a Bryzgalov video, Andy and Corey's day with the cup has been posted at the Stanley Cup Journal.  The Wild Wingers Kids Club renewals have gone out, and more!

Niedermeyer and Selanne Retirement Watch Update.

Niedermayer, Selanne status known next week

Ducks General Manager Brian Burke said he will ask the players for a decision, probably this weekend.

By DAN WOOD

The Orange County Register

The Ducks expect to know by early next week whether to expect team captain Scott Niedermayer and fellow superstar Teemu Selanne on the ice when training camp begins Sept. 10.

It doesn’t look promising in either case.

"Obviously, at some point I have to ask Scotty if he plans to come to camp or not," General Manager Brian Burke said Tuesday. "I have to ask them both that. I probably will pretty quickly, probably by this weekend.

"My guess would be that they’re probably not. If that were their intent, I think I would have heard by now."

The Stanley Cup Journal has been updated with Andy and Corey's days with cup.

Andy

After returning from Russia, the Stanley Cup was the guest of honour of All-Star sniper Andy McDonald on Saturday, August 11. It was an early birthday gift for the high-scoring McDonald, who celebrates his 30th birthday on August 25.

Andy met the Cup in London, Ontario, just outside his hometown of Strathroy. He and his guests climbed into a private plane and flew to Hamilton, New York, the home of Andy's alma mater, Colgate University.

It was on this campus that McDonald earned his introduction to the NHL. Deemed "too small" to play pro, he spent four seasons starring with Colgate, progressing further each year: 19 points in 1996-97; 32 in 1997-98; 46 in 1998-99 and 58 in 1999-2000. That spring, Andy McDonald was signed as a free agent by Anaheim.

Corey

For a young man just turned 20, Corey Perry has already seen the halcyon highs of hockey. In 2004-05, Perry led the Ontario Hockey League in scoring as his London Knights steamrolled over the competition on their way to the Memorial Cup. In addition to winning junior hockey's top prize that year, Corey also was part of Team Canada's gold medal win at the World Junior championship. Drafted by Anaheim in the first round of the 2003 NHL Entry Draft, he made his professional debut with the Ducks in 2005-06. Then, of course, in his sophomore season, Corey Perry is part of Stanley Cup history.

Sunday, August 12 saw Perry meet the Stanley Cup at the Peterborough Memorial Arena in his Ontario hometown. Joined by his brother and parents, Corey spent two hours signing autographs and posing for photos.

Al Coates

Before jetting off to Europe, Al Coates, the Senior Advisor to GM Brian Burke, took hockey's legendary trophy home to Listowel, Ontario.

It was a day of celebration with a tinge of melancholy for the community. There, in front of the library, is a monument that pays tribute to a horrific accident that befell the community at 9:30 on the morning of February 28, 1959. An accumulation of snow weighed down the roof of the local arena. Crackling timbers gave the peewee game in progress no warning, and the roof collapsed, killing eight and injuring 29. Seven of the dead were young hockey players.

A nice review of the happenings this month by MVN

Even though the Ducks extended their hockey season into June and the players are still taking turns with the Stanley Cup, it is inevitable by this time in August that we all find ourselves yearning for the season to start. Enough with the 90 degree weather - where is that refreshingly cool ice rink? The free season feeding frenzy has slowed to a virtual standstill. There aren’t even interesting arbitration hearings set (anyone else wish they had been a fly on the wall at Sean Avery’s?)

Rick Paterson had his day with the cup Monday

The Stanley Cup made its return to Tampa Bay on Monday - even if only for a day.

Treasure Island resident Rick Paterson, scouting director for the Anaheim Ducks, used his turn with hockey's Holy Grail to court it around several spots in St. Petersburg.

Paterson, 49, a former Lightning assistant and scout, hosted the Cup for the fourth time (he won two as a Penguins assistant in 1991-92). But this time has been more special: his wife, Kathy, gave birth to twins less than two days after the Ducks won the Stanley Cup in June.

"It was a pretty darn good 48 hours," Paterson said. "Won a Stanley Cup and had two healthy babies in 48 hours. That's tough to beat."

Well it was a slow morning, but the afternoon news more than makes up for it.  I found some Randy Carlyle photos, update on season tickets and part two of Teemu's day with the cup courtesy of Ducks TV.

Randy Carlyle with the cup

Hailing from Greater Sudbury, former star defenceman for the Sudbury Wolves and current head coach for the Anaheim Ducks, Randy Carlyle brought the Stanley Cup to Azilda Friday, Aug 17.

As part of the Stanley Cup tour, hockey fans from Sudbury and the surrounding area were able to see and have their picture taken with the Hockey Holy Grail as well as meet Randy Carlyle at the Dr. Edgar Le Claire arena located in Azilda.
