Anaheim Ducks News - Game Day Preview

Here is a game day preview by the AP. The game is on KDOC tonight so hopefully the reception will be good.

The Anaheim Ducks have been playing better on the road lately, but figuring
out a way to win in Edmonton has been difficult for a while. The Ducks will try to end their road woes against the Oilers when the teams square off on Friday night at Rexall Place. Anaheim (12-10-4) has just one win in 14 games in Edmonton since the start of the 1999-2000 season, going 1-10-3 over that span. The lone victory came was a 3-2 shootout win on Nov. 28, 2006. The Oilers (10-14-1) have outscored the Ducks 42-25 in those games. Edmonton, tied with Los Angeles for last in the Western Conference with 21 points, is just 6-7-0 at home this season but has won three of four on its own ice.

The defending Stanley Cup champions started this season with six straight road
losses, but are 4-2-0 away from home since then. They won 4-1 in Calgary on
Thursday behind 38 saves from goalie Jean-Sebastien Giguere for their sixth win in nine games overall.

Anaheim Ducks News for Tuesday - Part 3

Well here is the third and final post for tonight.  Just to review, Part 1 covers Getzlaf, Part 2 covers all the other player news and this third part covers all the other odds and ends.  I have a preview of tomorrow's game, an interview with Burke and a look at back at the first quarter of the season.

Ducks-Stars Preview

The Anaheim Ducks have had three days off to relish their recent turnaround. Their leading scorer particularly enjoyed the break.

With a new contract in hand, Ryan Getzlaf looks to lead the Ducks to a fifth consecutive victory on Wednesday when they host the Dallas Stars.

The defending Stanley Cup champions appear to have put a rough start behind them, going 6-1-1 this month and winning their last four games. Anaheim (10-8-3) had won just four of its first 13 games, failing to score more than two goals in nine of them.

The Ducks have scored at least four goals in four of their last seven games, a stretch during which Getzlaf has accounted for four goals and seven assists.

A quick look at the Bryzgalov issue

So why couldn't Ducks general manager Brian Burke at least get a draft choice for Bryzgalov, a potential unrestricted free agent next summer who is making $1.36 million this year? Although one team executive told me that Pittsburgh took a serious look at Bryzgalov a few weeks ago, apparently Burke never found a serious trading partner.

The Globe and Mail has a great look at Brian Burke

Most Canadians know Brian Burke as the forceful, combative hockey executive who shaped the Anaheim Ducks into the reigning Stanley Cup champions and who wouldn't seem out of place trading elbows with an opponent in front of the net.

What few people know is that Mr. Burke's hugely successful career in the National Hockey League was built on a strong legal foundation that continues to play an important role in how he views the sports world and his place in it.

"There is very little in my job that my law degree didn't directly provide valuable skills and background [for]," the Harvard Law School grad said.

Karen Francis who posts at MVN also has a post at Hockeytalk.biz covering the first quarter of the season

The Ducks had a slow start to the season, going 4-7-2 in October. Part of this had to do to roster changes. Scott Niedermayer and Teemu Selanne pondered official retirement. Dustin Penner was signed by the Edmonton Oilers as a restricted free agent. Mathieu Schneider, who was signed to potentially take Niedermayer’s place was out with a broken bone in his ankle. Todd Bertuzzi was in and out of the line up with various injuries. Andy McDonald had a rotating door for linemates, none of whom seemed to click. The Ducks started off in London, England, a mere eight time zones away from home after only a short off-season that followed winning the Stanley Cup in June. All of these little things added up to be big things.

Anaheim Ducks News - Kings Vs Ducks Round 4

Here is the AP preview of tonight's game.

A 4-1-1 record in November has gotten the Ducks (8-8-3) back to the break-even mark. Pronger has registered seven assists this month, including a helper on Ryan Getzlaf's power-play goal for the first score of Tuesday's game.

The defending Stanley Cup champions, who are facing the Kings for the second of three meetings in a six-game stretch, have won each of their last two games in shootouts. Anaheim, which began the season by splitting a two-game set with Los Angeles in London, is 11-4-4 against the Kings since the start of the 2005-06 season.

Kent Huskins scored a power-play goal and Todd Marchant also tallied for the Ducks on Tuesday. Anaheim has scored 10 goals in its last three games after being held to two or less in six of its previous seven contests.

The Ducks, though, must continue to improve on the road. They were winless in their first six road games (0-6-1) before a 5-2 win over Phoenix on Nov. 3.

Game Day Preview by the Ducks

After two season-opening games in London as part of NHL Premiere, the Ducks-Kings rivalry resumes in the Southland for two games this week beginning Tuesday at Honda Center.
Following a highly contentious 2006-07 season series between the teams, which featured three shootouts and seven of eight games decided by one goal, the Ducks and Kings opened this season by each earning 4-1 victories in the two games abroad.
“They’re our No.1 rival in the division,” Ducks coach Randy Carlyle said. “It’s a cross-town rivalry. We’re 45 minutes away. Every game last year was very close. I would dare to say that it’s going to be highly contested again this year in all the games against Los Angeles.”
The Ducks enjoy the rivalry and are eager to face the Kings for the first time this season since Sept. 30.
“The atmosphere’s great whether it’s here or at Staples Center,” Andy McDonald said. “The league wants to create rivalries to make it better for fans. Certainly there’s been one here with Los Angeles for a long time. I think the intensity picks up. It’s usually a more physical game. I know the guys get pretty geared up for it.”

MVN Preview of the game

The Ducks continue with their Pacific Division rivals this week. First off are two game with the Kings on Tuesday and Thursday, and San Jose on Saturday at the Shark Tank. The Ducks are coming off a 3-2 shootout win against the Sharks last Friday, their second shootout win in a row. They also earned a point against Phoenix on Wednesday. We won’t revisit the horrors of last Monday’s game against Dallas.

Speaking of Dallas, the Kings earned an amazing two points against the Stars on Saturday night. After being down 4-0 the Kings finally got things going in the third period and scored 5 goals in 5:07. Dallas tied up the game, but the Kings managed to pull off an overtime win. That is the momentum they are going to carry into Tuesday’s game at the Honda Center. This will be their third meeting of the season, the first two were in London and both teams won one game there.

Another Scott Niedermayer analysis

The news is bound to send a stir through fantasy hockey leagues: Scott Niedermayer is back on skates and might soon be lacing them up again with the Anaheim Ducks.

Niedermayer is in California working himself into shape and the word is he'll be ready to return by Christmas.

You'll remember Niedermayer announcing after the Ducks won the Stanley Cup that he might retire. Since he never made a commitment one way or the other, perhaps he now feels bad that his former team is floundering as the season near the one-quarter mark and wants to help.

Regardless, his team would obviously love to have his offensive skills back in the lineup. And so would poolies, especially those who own struggling Ducks like Francois Beauchemin, Chris Kunitz and Andy McDonald.

Anaheim Ducks News - Ducks Vs Coyotes 2 Preview

But that also came before an ugly 5-0 home loss to the Stars on Monday. After the second period, the Ducks pulled goalie Jean-Sebastien Giguere and the fans booed the home team off the ice. It was Anaheim's worst home loss in the regular season since 2001.

"I think they have a bit of a Stanley Cup hangover going on over there," Stars center Mike Modano said. "As much as they put into the playoffs last year, it's just tough to come back and get motivated and get up for games because of how hard you've been pushed physically and mentally only a few months ago. A couple of their key guys from last year aren't there, so they've got a different makeup."

BOC has a look at today's game

Stat of the Day: The Ducks have scored as many 5-on-4 goals in England (3 in 2 games) as they have in North America (3 in 14 games). And don’t get deceived by that latter stat—2 of those goals came within their first three games back.
In the last month, the Ducks have played 11 games (8 at home) and played more than 93 minutes of 5-on-4 hockey. In that time, they have scored only one goal (and gave up a shorthanded goal to offset it). Lately, a one-man advantage has meant no advantage at all.
