LA Times Coverage

Much like their spirited challenge for the net as teammates the last two seasons, the Ducks' Jean-Sebastien Giguere and Phoenix's Ilya Bryzgalov brought the best out of each other Saturday night.
Perhaps this game should have been played four years ago when the NHL was content with allowing games to end in a tie. Both were that sharp from the first puck drop.

Mixing it up

But the league saw fit to make sure there was a winner and a loser by putting in the shootout after the lockout, which is just what it took to decide a 3-2 victory by the Coyotes at Jobing.com Arena.
The difference was that Peter Mueller scored on Giguere and the Ducks couldn't put one by Bryzgalov in their three attempts. Not surprisingly, the Ducks weren't all that disappointed with this defeat after winning 24 hours earlier at home.

OC Register Coverage

Given that both of them stopped pretty much everything they had a realistic shot at, it was only fitting that Saturday night's goaltending duel between Jean-Sebastien Giguere of the Ducks and former protégé Ilya Bryzgalov would come down to a shootout.

For the second time since being obtained by Phoenix on waivers Nov. 17, Bryzgalov beat the Ducks in the NHL's regular-season tie-breaking format. He foiled all three Ducks shootout attempts, while rookie Peter Mueller slipped a shot past Giguere to give the Coyotes a 3-2 triumph at Jobing.com Arena.

MVN Coverage

Once again, the Ducks could not score more than two goals in a game, a problem that needs to be resolved. The Ducks were playing the second of back to back games in Phoenix, having played Chicago the night before. Jean-Sebastien Giguere was back in net after sitting out last night’s contest. In spite of having had some “flu-like” symptoms the day before, Giguere stopped 32 of 34 shots. At the other end was former Ducks goaltender, Ilya Bryzgalov, looking happily competitive and stopping 29 of 31 shots. It was the second time the goalies had faced off against each other, the first time also ending in a shut out.

Anaheim Ducks News - Ducks win 2-1

That was a fun game to watch. It was a goalies duel that ended with a Ducks victory. Giggy did great and while we did have some penalty problems, we still won. Enjoy the report!

Todd Marchant Postgame Interview

Official Ducks Coverage

Anaheim got on top on Ryan Getzlaf’s 15th goal of the season, set up by a great saucer pass from the redline by Francois Beauchemin. Getzlaf caught up to Beauchemin’s pass behind the defense, then made a move to his backhand before flicking it past Columbus goalie Pascal Leclaire.

Columbus erased the deficit with 4:01 left in the first, on a play where they appeared to be offside before rookie Andrew Murray rushed into the attacking zone on his way to his first career goal. Murray’s first shot on the move was kicked away by Giguere, but Murray put back the rebound off the post, off Giguere’s skate and in.

Giguere, who stopped 26 of 27 goals, including one at the final buzzer, thought the Ducks could “still do much better.” There is certainly room for improvement and as Pronger commented, “it wasn’t the best effort or the prettiest effort of the year.” But the results were just what the Ducks needed to start off the new year and it moves the Ducks in the right direction. Next up, the Chicago Blackhawks on Friday evening.

Pronger, who beat the Blue Jackets with an overtime goal on Dec. 10 at Columbus, gave the defending Stanley Cup champions a 2-1 lead with just 14.7 seconds left in the second period, while Sergei Fedorov was serving a hooking penalty.

The Ducks' captain took what appeared to be a routine slap shot toward the net from the left point, and defenseman Ron Hainsey made a move to glove the fluttering puck. But as he jerked his hand away at the last instant, it deflected off him and past goalie Pascal Leclaire's glove.

It's not style points, but standings points, that matter to the Ducks.

Given that subtle but important distinction, Wednesday night's exercise at Honda Center qualified as a rousing success, even if it took two fortuitous bounces and an airtight defensive effort anchored by goaltender Jean-Sebastien Giguere to produce a 2-1 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets.

LA Times Coverage

The calendar turned three days ago and the Ducks hope their fortunes have turned as well.
In the first half of the season, the defending Stanley Cup champions underachieved amid a host of injuries and a major shakeup in personnel. Whether it comes back to haunt them in the final 41 games remains to be seen.

But the Ducks started the new year on the right note with a 2-1 victory Wednesday night over the Columbus Blue Jackets before a sellout crowd of 17,174 at the Honda Center.

Anaheim Ducks News - Ducks beat Avs 2-1 (OT)

Defense won the day. Thanks to Pronger and Schneider with the the game winner, the Ducks were able to pull out the victory in OT. It was a boring game at times with the way the Avs played, but there were long periods of excitement when the Ducks or the Avs were being aggresive and getting a lot of scoring chances. One amazing stat was that we only had 3 penalties (not counting fighting majors). Anyway, here is the game coverage.

Hold a team to just 12 shots on goal and you’re usually going to get the win. But the Ducks needed overtime to take down Colorado at Honda Center, and defenseman Mathieu Schneider ended it with a pretty goal 3:31 into the extra session to give them a 2-1 victory.
In a game where the Ducks dominated on defense, it was appropriate that Schneider scored the winner and fellow d-man Chris Pronger had the tying goal in the third period to send it to overtime.

That mind-boggling collection of top-notch defensemen put together by the Ducks looks pretty good indeed.
Not only did the club’s blue-line corps -- led by the big four of Chris Pronger, Mathieu Schneider, Scott Niedermayer and Francois Beauchemin -- help limit the Colorado Avalanche to one goal Wednesday night at Honda Center, but it also produced both Ducks goals in a 2-1, overtime triumph.

The Ducks took a pause from their Shark attack to play the Colorado Avalanche at home on Wednesday night. An avalanche is described as “a sudden appearance of an overwhelming number of things.” In this case it would be shots by the Ducks on goaltender Peter Budaj. Jonas Hiller had a drought in comparison at the other end.

"We played a lot of hockey in their end tonight, and I think we just wore them down," Schneider said. "I thought our forwards did a great job of getting in on the forecheck and we controlled an awful lot of the play down low. It should have been a four or five-goal game, but their goalie stood on his head all night.

"We generated a lot of chances. And if we do that consistently, we're going to win a lot of games. You can sense that some of the guys have their swagger back a little bit. That little cockiness is important to have on a winning club."

With Niedermayer, Pronger, Schneider and Francois Beauchemin all playing more than 21 minutes, that corps took care of both ends of the ice.
Even after playing 24 hours before in San Jose, the Ducks thoroughly dominated a rested Avalanche team that hadn't played since beating the Kings on Monday. They seemed to play the entire game in the Colorado zone, holding the Avalanche to nine shots after two periods and badly outshot them, 34-12, through regulation.
All they could get on the scoreboard through the first 60 minutes was a goal by, who else, a defenseman.

Jean-Sebastien Giguere made 20 saves in his first shutout of the season, and Corey Perry and Bobby Ryan each scored goals for the Ducks in a 2-0 victory over San Jose on Tuesday night.

Giguere's shutout was the 26th of his career for the Ducks, who beat San Jose for the third time in four meetings this season. Scott Niedermayer picked up an assist in his second game since returning to the Ducks, leading a strong defensive game to shut out the Sharks for the first time all season.

Something about playing in HP Pavilion tends to bring out the best in the Ducks.
The loud arena that usually houses a boisterous sellout crowd is often considered one of the toughest venues in the NHL to play in. But it hasn't helped the San Jose Sharks lately in their meetings with their Pacific Division rival.

The Ducks won their fifth in a row there Tuesday night as they used goals by Corey Perry and Bobby Ryan along with Jean-Sebastien Giguere's first shutout of the season in a 2-0 victory that kept San Jose from taking over sole possession of first place in the division.

MVN Coverage

From shootout to shutout, it is clear that the Ducks are improving. Tuesday night’s game against the Sharks was the first time the two teams did not need extra time to decide things. Goalie Jean-Sebastien Giguere earned his first shutout since December 6, 2006! He stopped all 20 shots this evening and his team did their defensive best and blocked another 15 attempts. As good as Evgeni Nabokov was for the Sharks, he was not good enough to stop the Ducks from scoring.

“It’s a big game and you’ve got to have people get the job done in big games,” said Sharks Head Coach Ron Wilson. “We shouldn’t play the way we did in a big game like this. This was an opportunity to put some distance between Anaheim and us. I’m most disappointed we didn’t build on the other night. It’s inexplicable to not have the extra passion tonight.”

If the Ducks are going to climb their way back into the thick of the Stanley Cup playoff race in the NHL’s Western Conference, Tuesday night’s 2-0 victory over the San Jose Sharks at HP Pavilion would provide the perfect blueprint.
With Corey Perry and rookie Bobby Ryan providing timely goals and goaltender Jean-Sebastien Giguere supplying a solid performance to back a stout defensive effort, the Ducks not only recorded their first shutout of the season, but handed San Jose its first shutout in 34 games this season.

Anaheim Ducks News for Friday - Ducks lost to Wild 5-2

Ouch. We were completely shut down by the oppressive defense of the Wild. The wild uncharacteristically scored 3 points more than the Ducks. Usually they only win games by one point. For those of you who were sound asleep midway through the game Burke said Scott and the new guy will be starting on Sunday. Good we need them after a game like tonight. One thing I thought of is that the trade of McDonald probably means Teemu will NOT be back. After all what line would he play on? The top two lines are now going to be grinding lines, the third line is a checking line and the fourth is the energy line? Disagree? Leave a comment!

Added head coach Randy Carlyle, "I think it had something to do with it, but I wouldn’t consider that the sole reasoning behind the outcome. I think we lacked emotion, intensity and we didn’t get the goaltending that was necessary to have success. I didn’t think our forecheck was strong enough. I didn’t think our penalty killing was good enough. There was a number of things that you can point to that we just weren’t good enough in. We have to accept responsibility for the way we played."

The Ducks played a flu ravaged Minnesota Wild on Friday. The flu apparently had abated enough for the Wild to put a full line up on the bench. By the end of the game it was the Ducks who should have felt nauseous. The Wild had only managed to score three goals in the past three games, yet even at less than 100%, they ravaged the Ducks. Josh Harding got the start in goal for the Wild while Jean-Sebastien Giguere got the nod for the Ducks. The Ducks played without Andy McDonald, who had been traded earlier in the afternoon to St. Louis in exchange for Doug Weight.

Maybe the Ducks can blame this one on the trade the club announced two hours before Friday night’s ugly 5-2 loss to the Minnesota Wild at Honda Center.

With center Andy McDonald having been swapped to the St. Louis Blues in a deal that landed veteran center Doug Weight, the Ducks certainly played as if they were monumentally distracted. Goaltender Jean-Sebastien Giguere surrendered a bad first-period goal to Minnesota’s Aaron Voros, and the Wild drove Giguere to an early exit with the first two of four second-period, power-play goals.

Not that it improved the product on ice as the Ducks capped an eventful afternoon with an emotionless clunker a few hours later, this one by a 5-2 count against the Minnesota Wild at Honda Center.
Normally steady Jean-Sebastien Giguere was pulled in the second period after Eric Belanger's power-play goal gave Minnesota a 3-0 lead. The Wild had scored just four goals in their last four games, but they hit that total in the second alone, all of them with the man advantage, rendering scores by Brad May and Todd Bertuzzi all but meaningless.

Anaheim Ducks News for Wednesday - Ducks Lose to Canucks 3-2

Well even though the Ducks lost it was a fun game to watch. The key to tonight's loss was defensive breakdowns. These caused the Ducks to be behind early in the game. The Canucks scored the first three goals of the game, two by players who had never scored goals in the NHL before, and barely withstood a Ducks charge in the third period.
Trailing 3-1 going into the final stanza, the Ducks outshot Vancouver a whopping 16-1 in the period, but didn’t find the net until there was 1:31 to go in game. That was on a deflected slap shot by Mathieu Schneider from the right circle, with goalie J.S. Giguere pulled from the net to give the Ducks a man advantage. But Anaheim’s efforts to score the tying marker were denied over the final minute and a half.

Injury fill-ins Mason Raymond and Jason Jaffray assisted on each other's first NHL goals and the Vancouver Canucks -- without forward Brendan Morrison -- beat the Ducks, 3-2, on Wednesday night at the Honda Center.
Morrison's 542-game playing streak, the longest current run in the NHL, ended when the center was forced out of the lineup by a wrist injury that will require surgery. The streak that began on Feb. 27, 2000 is the 11th-longest in league history.

In the first period there was not much action or excitement and the crowd went crazier over seeing Snoop Dogg on the Jumbotron alongside black hockey pioneer Willie O’Ree. Then the Canucks woke up. Mason Raymond, who was just called up yesterday, got his first NHL goal at 17:35. Raymond credited his linemates “Hats off to the guys who made some good passes out there. The goal is one I will always remember, always cherish.” Daniel Sedin took advantage of a puck that Chris Kunitz coughed up in the defensive zone and made it 2-0 at 18:40. Ryan Getzlaf said it “was a weird period. We were trying to get our matchups in and it was tough to get rolling.” Obviously.

As far as debuts go, it’s hard to top this. Jason Jaffray, who was playing in his first NHL game, scored a goal and added an assist to help lead the Vancouver Canucks to a 3-2 victory over the Ducks on Wednesday night at Honda Center. Defense ruled the first half of the opening period as both teams had a problem getting close to the net. The Ducks took two shots during the first 10 minutes of the game. The Canucks did them one better, getting the puck to Ducks goalie Jean-Sebastien Giguere three times during the same span.

The Ducks met a vastly improved Blackhawks team for the first time this season. Patrick Kane, drafted #1 overall this past June, and Jonathan Toews, drafted 3rd overall in 2006, have both made an impact this year for the Hawks and helped put the team in playoff contention for the first time in six years. The Ducks were coming off an excellent 4-1 win over the Buffalo Sabres on Wednesday, coupled with the news that defenseman Scott Niedermayer will be returning to the Ducks this year. In the morning before they were to face Buffalo at Honda Center, the Ducks learned that Scott Niedermayer would soon be returning to the team.
Then they went out and played like he was already back.

Though the players were informed hours prior, Niedermayer’s comeback out of a retirement indecision was announced by the team less than a half hour before the Ducks began their dismantling of a streaking Sabres team 4-1 in front of a sellout crowd of 17,147 at Honda Center

Andy McDonald had a goal and an assist, Mathieu Schneider and Corey Perry scored power-play goals, and the Anaheim Ducks snapped a 10-game winless streak against the Buffalo Sabres with a 4-1 victory Wednesday night.

About a half-hour before the opening faceoff, Ducks general manager Brian Burke announced that playoff MVP Scott Niedermayer decided to return to the defending Stanley Cup champions after spending five months contemplating retirement. Burke's remarks were replayed before the game on the video board the game and again during the first intermission, with the sellout crowd of 17,174 crowd roaring its approval.

It could have been 3-1 at that point, but Buffalo goaltender Ryan Miller dove and covered a loose puck, which was slowly rolling toward the goal line. It came within inches of giving the Ducks another goal.

Inconsistency has been a problem for this year’s Anaheim Ducks, but there has been one constant – they can’t seem to figure out the Edmonton Oilers.

For the second time in three nights, the Ducks (12-12-4) were overwhelmed by an Edmonton team (12-14-1) that is near the bottom of the Western Conference standings. The Oilers scored twice in each of the first two stanzas on their way to a 4-0 victory over Anaheim at Honda Center.

The win was the second straight over the Ducks for the Oilers, who beat Anaheim 5-1 at Rexall Place on Friday night, and the third overall this season. (The Oilers took a 3-2 decision in a shootout in Anaheim on Oct. 28.)

The Copper and Blue were black and blue after Sunday's game but the Edmonton Oilers ran the Stanley Cup champions out of their own building where it hurt most - on the scoreboard.

The Oilers, who turned the other cheek to the physical play of the Anaheim Ducks, got the last laugh. Anaheim played almost every shift in ill-humour but took too many overly-aggressive penalties, many in the offensive zone, and paid a dear price in a 4-0 loss to Edmonton.

The Ducks continued to stall out in a 4-0 shut out to the Oilers tonight. It was the second of home and home games with the Oilers, the third meeting of the season. None of them have been successful and the Ducks should be grateful that the Oilers are not in their same division. There is only one more meeting between these two teams on December 27 up in Edmonton. And 54 more games against other teams.

Edmonton got goals from four players and Mathieu Garon recorded his second shutout as the Oilers handed the Ducks a 4-0 defeat on Sunday at Honda Center.

The Ducks were swept in the home-and-home series and were outscored 9-1 in the two games. They have dropped five of their past seven games and fell back to .500 in one of their most disappointing losses of the early season.

Edmonton entered the game with the third-worst record in the Western Conference and was without second-leading scorer Ales Hemsky because of a leg injury. But the Oilers scored four goals on their first 14 shots on Ducks goaltender Jean-Sebastien Giguere and Garon made 25 saves.

It wasn't flashy, but Dustin Penner gave the Anaheim Ducks a reminder of what they lost when they let him go in the off-season.

While the Ducks continued to struggle to find their scoring touch, Penner set up in the crease and scored a first period goal - when the puck deflected off his mouth - as Edmonton completed a sweep of a home-and-home series against Anaheim with a 4-0 victory Sunday.

In a dark sense, the Ducks found some level of consistency Sunday night.
Another shot at the Edmonton Oilers turned out just as bad as it did two nights before, with this debacle decided by a 4-0 score that had many among the sellout crowd of 17,174 at the Honda Center heading for the exit well before the final horn sounded.

That's enough

If the Ducks' 5-1 loss Friday night in Edmonton was a horror show, then Sunday in Anaheim turned out to be a chilling sequel. And the frost was felt in a cold dressing room afterward.

We have one line that can score and the rest of the lines are just there because we can't have the Getzlaf/Perry/whoever line out their the whole 60 minutes.  We had something special last year with two lines that could score, a third line that could should down the other teams top line while putting a puck or two once in a great while.  If the Bertuzzi/McDonald/whoever line could sync up the Ducks would be in good form to start kicking butt.  Otherwise the teams that have are able to shut down the G/P/? line will end up winning the game.  This is what happened last night.  Well enough of my analysis, here is the news.

The Edmonton Oilers take home-ice advantage to a whole new level when the Anaheim Ducks pay a visit.

Shawn Horcoff had a goal and two assists to lead Edmonton to a 5-1 victory Friday night, improving the Oilers to 11-1-3 in their last 15 home games against the Ducks.

Ales Hemsky, Kyle Brodziak, Andrew Cogliano and Steve Staios also scored for Edmonton, which equalled a season high in goals.

"We haven't had goals like that all year really," said Oilers head coach Craig MacTavish. "We had great shots and some really nice goals. Hopefully that is a sign of things to come.

Mathieu Schneider's tenure with the Ducks consists of a third of a season, and he's been limited to only 12 games because of injuries, but that's plenty long enough for the veteran defenseman to recognize a serious issue plaguing the defending Stanley Cup champions.

"One of our biggest problems has been keeping an even keel," Schneider said Friday night after a meltdown late in the second period robbed the Ducks of any chance of victory at Rexall Place.

All Ducks Coach Randy Carlyle could do as the horn sounded to end the second period was stare out at center ice and try to comprehend what had happened only moments before.
The Ducks spent nearly half the period on the power play, yet a tied score turned into a two-goal deficit only seconds before intermission.
Stung by goals from Shawn Horcoff and Kyle Brodziak in the final 37 seconds of the period, the Ducks were done when the Edmonton Oilers tacked on two more in the third Friday night, rolling to a 5-1 victory at Rexall Place.

The Ducks, like most of the NHL teams this year, have been looking for consistency. After a horrible effort and a loss in Vancouver, the Ducks came back with a great effort and a win Calgary. Could they have two good games in a row? Nope.

Friday night’s game looked quite similar to Thursday night’s game. The Ducks were in the penalty box early in the first period and Ales Hemsky put the Oilers on the board with a power play goal at 2:12. Ryan Getzlaf tied up the game at 7:03. Same story line as in Calgary, only the players names had been changed.

Back in the building where he played four years of junior hockey, Ryan Getzlaf treated the sell-out crowd of 19,289 to a stroll down memory lane.

Continuing his red-hot play of late, Getzlaf set up two goals, including the game-winner, in leading the Anaheim Ducks to a 4-1 win over the Calgary Flames on Thursday.

In setting up Chris Kunitz's game-winner with 41 seconds left in the first period, Getzlaf showcased the playmaking ability that made him a fan favourite while with the Western Hockey League's Calgary Hitmen.

Goals by Todd Marchant, Chris Kunitz and Corey Perry, and an empty-netter from Rob Niedermayer, enabled the Ducks to top the Calgary, Flames, 4-1, Thursday night at the Pengrowth Saddledome.

A power-play strike by Perry, his team-high 13th goal of the season, stretched the Ducks’ lead to 3-1 at the four-minute mark of the second period.

The Ducks overcame on early 1-0 deficit on the strength of first-period goals by Marchant and Kunitz.

After Calgary’s Alex Tanguay struck on the power play just 3:08 into the game, the Ducks got even when Marchant banged in a goal-mouth pass from Todd Bertuzzi at 5:53. Andy McDonald also picked up an assist, playing a short passing game with Bertuzzi, who wound up behind the net before feeding Marchant.

The Ducks came into Calgary more than a little embarrassed with their performance in Vancouver two days ago. Wednesday’s practice was put into the players’ hands and they determined what they were to work on. Time to take ownership and motivate each other. Coach Randy Carlyle stated “we will be judged by how we respond.” The Ducks responded and took steps in the right direction.

First step was Jean-Sebastien Giguere. He’s been a Duck for so long, most have forgotten that he was acquired from Calgary for a 2nd round draft pick on June 10, 2000. He played 22 games for the Flames organization and he admits he could not stop a beach ball during those days. Giguere has come a long way since those days and has prospered under the tutelage of goaltending coach Francois Allaire. Tonight Giguere stopped 38 of 39 shots and came up huge when needed. He had high praise for the team in front of him for doing their job as well.

Think the Anaheim Ducks felt bad?
Ruining the night of Jarome Iginla is the least of their worries.
Especially recently.
Despite Iginla taking over as the Calgary Flames' all-time games-played leader Thursday, the Ducks did all the celebrating, cobbling together a 4-1 triumph in National Hockey League action at the Pengrowth Saddledome.

Flames coach Mike Keenan had had a hunch what was coming from the underachieving travellers.
"Well, they're motivated, not because of the recency effect of losing the last game (a 4-0 loss Tuesday at Vancouver), but they are the defending Stanley Cup champions, and they are not in a playoff position, like ourselves, and they expect to have better results overall," Keenan noted before the game.

Anaheim Ducks News - Ducks Lose 4-0

It was like Jekyll and Hyde with the Ducks tonight. First Period they played with speed and aggressiveness that I have not seen much of this year. The second period they were driven back on their heels by the Canucks first and the refs second. Thankfully the game ended after 4 5-3 advantages for the Canucks and one penalty shot( they missed). It was very painful to watch the second half of the game. Well if you are glutton for punishment, here is the game report.

British Columbia (AP) -Roberto Luongo bought his Canucks enough time to get going offensively and avenge last season's playoff loss to Anaheim.

Luongo made 15 of his 26 saves in the first period, and Vancouver responded with three-straight goals in the second en route to a 4-0 win over the Ducks on Tuesday night. Ryan Kesler added his second of the game on a third-period power play as the Canucks improved to 8-1-2 in their last 11 games.

"Our first period was poor, but after that I thought we poured it on and dominated the game, said Markus Naslund, who had a goal and an assist.

Todd Bertuzzi downplayed the hype of playing his first NHL game in Vancouver in 17 months.

But Tuesday turned out to be a night to remember for all the wrong reasons.

Bertuzzi was on the ice for both of Vancouver's even-strength goals as the Canucks scored a rare 4-0 victory over the Anaheim Ducks.

Markus Naslund, one of Bertuzzi's best friends on the Canucks before he was traded to Florida in June 2006, opened the scoring and added an assist.

Markus Naslund and the Vancouver Canucks spoiled Todd Bertuzzi’s homecoming Tuesday night.

Naslund, Vancouver’s captain and Bertuzzi’s former partner on a high-octane Canucks line the first half of this decade, scored a goal and added an assist to spark a 4-0 victory over the Ducks at GM Place.

The game was Bertuzzi’s first in Vancouver since the Canucks sent him to the Florida Panthers in a blockbuster June 2006 trade that landed goaltender Roberto Luongo.

The Ducks arrived in Vancouver with media waiting to greet former Canuck, Todd Bertuzzi. Their arrival did not go unnoticed but their game against the Canucks was no reason to hold a press conference. It was a “what not to do” moment for a team that had shown better character just two nights before in coming from behind to defeat the Kings.

The Ducks best period was the first period. They outshot the Canucks 15 - 5 and had the best chances. Goalie Roberto Luongo kept the Canucks in the game. It is unclear what happened between periods, but it appears the Ducks left their game plan in the locker room and Vancouver got going with theirs in the second.

As they do for every game, the Ducks committed their affair with the Vancouver Canucks to videotape for review later, but their performance Tuesday night should warrant the burning of any and all copies.
The Ducks got frustrated as the night wore on and simply dissolved as a team from the second period on in what will go down as an unqualified mess in a 4-0 loss at General Motors Place.

In what is quickly turning into a November to remember for the Canucks, maybe now Vancouver can finally forget about Todd Bertuzzi.

The Canucks spoiled Bertuzzi's much-ballyhooed return with an impressive 4-0 win Tuesday night over the Anaheim Ducks at GM Place.

Bertuzzi did his part: he was minus-two on the night.

Burke wants to change things again, update

You can say a lot of things about Anaheim Ducks' general manager Brian Burke, but you cannot dispute his persistency.

For the better part of two years now, Burke has been lobbying for an amendment to the collective bargaining agreement that would allow teams to trade players, but have a portion of the traded players' salary count against their own salary cap.

He was at it again Monday morning, when the 30 NHL general managers got together for a wide-ranging two-hour conference call that, among other things, rejected the idea that teenage sensation John Tavares could opt in a year early to the NHL entry draft.

We know the new schedule format will be the sexy story of this week's board of governors meetings at The Inn at Spanish Bay near Pebble Beach, Calif.

But there is at least one issue that could come up this week that could have a more significant impact on the game, and we don't mean why the board insists on meeting as far away from an actual NHL game as humanly possible.

ESPN.com has learned NHL general managers will take part in a conference call Monday, when they will try and come to a consensus on the pros and cons of proposing changes to the collective-bargaining agreement that would allow teams to trade players while retaining a portion of a player's salary. The hope is the issue will then get a hearing before the board of governors when they meet Thursday and Friday.

Under the current system, many GMs have complained that the possibility of making trades is near impossible because they don't have the option of eating any salary of a player they might like to trade.

Another update on the Kids for Kids drive

The Ducks announced today that the Wild Wingers Kids Club and Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) have partnered for the second annual Kits for Kids Donation Drive, giving Ducks fans the opportunity to purchase Kids Club kits for CHOC patients for the holidays.

“This is a great way for our fans to give back to the community,” said Ducks Director of Fan Development Matt Savant. “We’re hoping to build on the overwhelming response from last year’s drive to help make the holiday season brighter for children receiving care at CHOC.”

The Official Ducks site takes a look at Brian Sutherby

"He’s a big kid who can skate and he plays an aggressive style," says Ducks head coach Randy Carlyle. "This is an opportunity for a player to play to a higher level and give us what he’s got. I don’t think you’ll see Brian Sutherby as a pure offensive player, but he’s a player who will get into the dirty areas, go to the front of the net, defend his teammates and be physical. "

Sutherby, chosen 26th overall in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft, will return to his birthplace of Edmonton when the Ducks play the Oilers on Friday night.

The OC Register has a look at Bert's return to Vancouver

The hockey-mad populace of Vancouver has waited more than 17 months for former Canucks star Todd Bertuzzi to return to GM Place.

The occasion finally appears imminent Tuesday, with Bertuzzi set to arrive in a Ducks uniform, the third he has worn since Vancouver dealt the standout winger to the Florida Panthers in a blockbuster trade for superstar goaltender Roberto Luongo that was the biggest single reason the Canucks returned to the Stanley Cup playoffs last season.

Calgary Herald has a look at Bert's return to Vancouver

"There's no question it's going to be emotional in a lot of ways for me," said Bertuzzi, now with the Anaheim Ducks, from his home in California while preparing for Sunday's game against the Los Angeles Kings.

"After all the great years and great friends I made in the city, it's going to be very strange to be back there playing. It's going to be a very different experience, a very difficult game to play."
