Anaheim Ducks News for Tuesday

Hello all, one more player to add to the IR list.  Rob Niedermayer is out with a leg issue. Other than that, it was a slow news day.

Ducks Injury update via MVN

The Ducks held a light optional practice yesterday and this morning they were back to the usual pre-game routine. Missing from action was George Parros, who was put on the IR yesterday after news that he would be out longer than a week with a bruised knee. Rob Niedermayer was also missing due to a leg injury suffered “either last game or in the practice before,” per coach Randy Carlyle.

Another update on injuries

The Ducks will be without two-thirds of their vaunted checking line Tuesday night against the Dallas Stars at Honda Center, with right wing Rob Niedermayer joining center Samuel Pahlsson on the sidelines.

Niedermayer suffered a groin injury early in Sunday’s 4-3, overtime victory over the visiting San Jose Sharks, and though he made it through the game, the results weren’t good when Niedermayer tried to skate Tuesday morning.

The Kits for Kids drive update

The Ducks announced today the overwhelming success of the second annual Kits for Kids Donation Drive. Ducks fans and supporters donated over 1,600 Wild Wingers Kids Club kits to patients at Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) during the holiday season.  A majority of the kits were personally delivered by the entire Ducks roster during the team’s holiday visit to CHOC on Dec. 20, 2007.

“We’re so pleased with the response from the community to our donation drive,” said Ducks Director of Fan Development Matt Savant.  “Seeing the faces of CHOC patients light up when they received their kits was priceless and we hope to build on this success for next year’s drive.”

A profile on Beauchemin

It isn't often that Francois Beauchemin has scored a game-winning goal in overtime.
In fact, the Ducks' third-year defenseman couldn't recall Monday if he had scored an overtime goal in junior hockey or the minor leagues.
"That's not something you really think about," said Beauchemin, a day after his second goal of the season beat San Jose, 4-3. "But I'm glad that it happened."

Anaheim Ducks News for Monday

I am finally getting back into the swing of things after a week off.  There is a lot to report on as the Ducks have recalled Miller and a few other articles were posted today.

Build your on life size Rob Niedermayer Poster - Find out how - Link

Ryan Miller is recalled, a status update on the injuries and a few other misc. notes via MVN

Miller’s return is primarily due to the fact that George Parros is now on IR with his bruised knee, retroactive to last Wednesday. Although Parros skated lightly today, he is still not progressing fast enough to be reinserted into the line up.

Sami Pahlsson experienced a set back at practice on Saturday with new soreness in the abdominal area. As a result, he was not taken off IR and will not play against Dallas tomorrow evening. Even though he is on IR, he is still considered day to day. It will depend on how soon he recovers and if he does not have further soreness and inflammation.

Francois Beauchemin gets a little coverage in the OC Register

“Sometimes the minus is a stat you don’t look at specifically,” Ducks Coach Randy Carlyle said. “His was minus-12 at one point. We talked to him about trying to do less, be safer, get your confidence from a defensive aspect first before you start to stray out on the other side of it. He’s been more conservative and he’s picked his times to jump into the play. That’s what we ask of all our defensemen.”

Official Ducks interview of Beauchemin

Having to deal with the absence of his defensive partner from the past two seasons, and as a result an increase in minutes and pressure, Beauchemin had some difficult adjustments to make in the early part of this season. That’s part of the reason the third-year defenseman saw his plus/minus rating this season reach a team low -12 at one point.

Anaheim Ducks News for Wednesday Non Game News

Here is the news that is not related to details of tonight's game. By the way, Pahlsson is back.

The Los Angeles Times has great coverage of Giguere's Beauchemin's, Kunitz's, Getzlaf's, Moen's, Pahlsson's, Selanne's and the Niedermayers days with the cup. They are called "Audio Galleries" - Link

An article on the banner raising, but more interestingly quote from Scott Niedermayer on his potential retirement

"Yeah, I'm in quite a different situation than I've ever been before," Scott Niedermayer said. "To be able to go there and be a part of putting that banner up to the ceiling, to be there to support everybody who was part of that, is a great moment. I knew it was going to be a big moment, going back to the rink, There will be some different feelings on my part, as to what the future holds.

"I'm going to have to make a decision sooner or later. I don't have a time frame. It's hard for me to judge 'soon' — within two weeks, or two months. I don't know exactly what 'soon' means. I hope the sooner the better, but there still could be some time here."

Ryan Carrter has gone back to Portland

Ryan Carter was sent down from the Anaheim Ducks to the Portland Pirates yesterday evening. This is to make room on the roster for Samuel Pahlsson who is coming off injured reserve. Carter has had a surreal life since last spring. He was called up to the Ducks during the playoffs and played four games for the Ducks, including one game in the Stanley Cup Finals. That earned him his name on the Cup and his own 24 hours with Stanley in the summer. Carter, along with the rest of the team, received his Stanley Cup ring on Monday evening.

Earl from BOC has a look at the Ducks

After a road trip that can best be described as "predictably brutal", the Ducks finally raise their banners tonight in front of the home crowd--Scott and Teemu are supposed to be in attendance, so that should be an interesting ceremony, at least. I'm not going to overcriticize the team for the lackluster start, even though the last three cup-winners have all had excellent starts to their year: Tampa Bay took points in 14 of its first 16 games (11-2-3), Carolina earned points in 13 of 16 (12-3-1), and last year's Ducks got points in all 16 (12-0-4).

This year's Ducks have only taken points in 2 out of its first 5 games, but I'm staying optimistic. Here's some semi-random thoughts I've been mulling over:

1. Last year's Senators recovered from a brutal start to make the cup finals, so a rough start isn't insurmountable. Ottawa took points in only 7 of its first 16, but unlike the Ducks so far, the Senators' goal-differential was pretty promising. Just a side note on the Sens' top line: it took them less than 2 games this season to score as many goals and points as they got in all 5 games against the Ducks last spring. Just sayin'.

2. Fortunately, the rest of the Pacific Division has started slowly as well. The Ducks will have a games-in-hand issue as the season goes on, but I'm surprised nobody in the division has passed the Ducks in the standings yet. Last year, the Pacific produced three 107-point teams; so far this year nobody in the division sits above the .500 mark and every team is getting outscored.

Some coverage of the Ducks Stanley Cup event
Eight big floodlights started at 4 p.m., which didn't seem to make sense since the sun was still shining high above Honda Center.

But this was no ordinary evening at the hockey rink. The place was so decked out it looked like it was ready to play host to some Hollywood premiere and not the Ducks' home opener.

Fans stood three and sometimes four rows deep along the red carpet that stretched from the parking lot to the Southeast entrance of the arena. They waved towels, signs, jerseys and even stuffed teddy bears in a frantic attempt to catch the players' attention. Those stuck in the back waved their camera phones in the air trying to capture this historic moment

Jenn Pletcher and Stephanie Broyles, both from Long Beach, were some of the first to arrive, staking out a spot in front of the makeshift stage that was set up just outside of the glass doors leading into the Honda Center. That's where the defending Stanley Cup champions would stop for their TV interviews. Broyles and Pletcher said it felt like they had been there for five hours, but really it was more like 45 minutes.

An hour before the Ducks were scheduled to arrive, there were about 10 people waiting outside the arena, and Tammy Sides of Cypress was one of them.

News related to tonight's game

The Ducks Official Preview

Honda Center
TV: None     Radio: AM 830
The Ducks close out their preseason with a matchup tonight against the Canucks, whom they defeated six days ago in Vancouver.
Ducks rookie Petteri Wirtanen scored two goals in that game, including the winner with 1:36 left in overtime to give the Ducks a 3-2 decision.
The Canucks are 2-1-1 in the preseason, taking their first loss in regulation last night in San Jose, 3-1. That was the same score the Ducks lost by in San Jose on Friday night.
The Ducks eliminated Vancouver in five games in last year's Western Conference Semifinals.
Ducks defenseman Francois Beauchemin, who missed the Ducks' last preseason game with a sore groin muscle, has indicated he will play tonight. The Ducks still are without the services of J.S. Giguere and Samuel Pahlsson (both out after abdominal surgeries) and defenseman Mathieu Schneider (fractured left ankle).
The Ducks leave Monday night for London to open the regular season with two games against the Kings for the NHL Premiere on Sept. 29 and 30.

According to the LA Times, tonight's the night to decide the rest of the spots

The Ducks' final exhibition game tonight at home against the Vancouver Canucks will be the last opportunity for players to state their case for what are probably three positions up for grabs on the opening-night roster.
Among the jobs available is a spot on the wing of one of their two scoring lines. Two openings appeared with the departures of Teemu Selanne and Dustin Penner, but one was filled with the signing of Todd Bertuzzi.
The other opening gives hope to the likes of youngster Drew Miller, top prospect Bobby Ryan or journeyman Jason King, each of whom has shown offensive capability at lower levels.
Their fate, along with that of other candidates vying for jobs, could be determined tonight.
"When you have a number of bodies around and you know you've got to make some tough decisions, there's always an opportunity when you get a chance to play in a game," Ducks Coach Randy Carlyle said.
Carlyle will make final decisions by Monday before the Ducks leave for London, where they begin the regular season as defending Stanley Cup champions against the Kings.
There has been a push for Ryan, 20, the second overall pick of the 2005 draft, to crack the roster. No. 1 pick Sidney Crosby became the NHL's most valuable player, and the third overall pick, defenseman Jack Johnson, is expected to be in the Kings' lineup on Saturday.

Beauchemin in tonight?

With Scott Niedermayer and Teemu Selanne absent, and Jean-Sebastien Giguere, Samuel Pahlsson and Mathieu Schneider hurt, the last thing the Ducks needed was a significant injury to Francois Beauchemin.

The Ducks seem to have avoided that misfortune. Beauchemin practiced Saturday after a sore groin had kept him off the ice since Monday’s exhibition game at Vancouver, and appeared likely to play tonight when the Ducks close their exhibition campaign against the Canucks at Honda Center.

"A couple days off, just working out and not skating, helped a lot," Beauchemin said. "I’ll be playing."

Coach Randy Carlyle wasn’t as definitive, saying he wants Beauchemin in the lineup for the final tune-up before Saturday’s regular-season opener in London against the Kings, but emphasizing that he wouldn’t risk further injury.

With Niedermayer still weighing retirement, and his anticipated replacement, Schneider, expected to be out until at least mid-October because of a fractured left ankle, the Ducks can ill afford to be without Beauchemin. In just his second NHL campaign, Beauchemin led all Ducks defensemen in ice time during last season’s Stanley Cup playoffs, despite the presence of superstars Niedermayer and Chris Pronger.

So strong last season, the club’s defense is very much an unknown at this point. Not only do the Ducks face the challenge of replacing Niedermayer, who like Selanne continues to weigh possible retirement and might or might not return, but now there is also the void left by Schneider’s injury.

Francois Beauchemin - Day with the cup

Warning - Warning -Warning - Bad French translation ahead. I found this article on Francois but it is in French. Thankfully google provides a free bad translation service. So I used that and here is the translation. If you can read French, here is a link to the original artcle, otherwise read below.

François Beauchemin, one gaining as Sorelois like them! Louise Gregoire-Racicot Sunday. Midday. Whereas François Beauchemin advances towards the kiosk of the Regard park on the river, the Stanley Cut well in hands, a sunbeam leaves victoriously the large dark cloud which threatened crowd and plunges of all her fires on the obviously proud man to be among his - as it had promised last on June 6, when the team of Ducks d' Anaheim of which it is a burning defender had gained the worthy trophy. Already at 11 a.m., the park filled quickly. Per hour when formerly, the large-mass started, some 3000 Sorelois were on the point of applauding one as of their which makes him honor. A player of hockey - raising the black pullover with the number 23 of Ducks, One of its “sporting heroes” here born - member of a stock family resulting from Hus - who do not hesitate at all to return at his place, the summer. Who not only does not give up his native area or looks it of top but division with it, liberally, which arrives to him of beautiful in this pitiless world of the sports. It was necessary to see the pride of its family and her friends. That of its trainers of minor hockey all present to greet it. That of an area which sees in him a testimony living of what can give courage, the determination and the discipline. Because so much Louis Plamondon, who addressed the word to the thousands of people present, that Marcel Robert, pointed out the way of career that Beauchemin followed since its fishing out in 75e place, then its passage, during 5 years in the American league playing for Hamilton and Syracuse before being exchanged in Ducks where it really appeared. “A long course which led it to the Stanley Cut and did of him one of the 5 best defenders of the national league. ”, Plamondon said. “And that, while keeping its feeling of membership of the area, like made before him Pierre Mondou who agné his first Cut Stanley 30 years ago this year!” Present, Pierre Mondou - always also smiling and appreciated - was the Sorelois last to be returned to the Country of Occurring with the Stanley cut in 1979, was applauded by crowd. And for immortaliser this moment, proposed the organizer of the meeting, Yannick Lévesque, it invited Mondou to pass the Cut to Beauchemin, with the way in which the players of the same team do without it the evening the great victory! “A passage of torch” which was made with emotion and a certain grace! Marcel Robert, as for him, increased by ensuring that the city would continue to invest in its sporting infrastructures in order to support the talents under development of its young people. He greeted the parents of Beauchemin which, has he says, had to spend some the hours in the sporting centers to follow progress of their son! As for Beauchemin - which finally spoke - “it is easier to patinate” has it says of entry of play - it qualified this victory of unforgettable moment arrived after a career not easy but where it always wanted to improve, to involve itself, to discipline its daily newspaper - not too much “party” in particular, it specified. He thanked his parents who always were at his sides, devoting time and money to his advance. “Without them I would not be returned there”, it insisted. As it thanked his wife Marie-Claude “who knew to compose with my character and understood that I needed sometimes to rather spend time in my armchair than going in the center of purchase. And when our son was born last July, I did not have to often raise me the night because it nursed the baby for 8 months, which enabled me to remain in form to play hockey!” Finally at the request of a spectator, he recalled the two last minutes of play of this last part of the finales, where he was more than two minutes on the ice after having counted a goal. “Two very long minutes and half where I looked at sometimes more the dial that the disc so much I had haste that that finishes, since we were in advance. Moments that I will not forget” it began again! Another walkabout Then it was the true walkabout. Of this crowd which it had flown over in the helicopter during several minutes before landing on the property of Franciscains and to go up on board a car to cross the park towards those which had awaited it some for more than four hours. A walkabout inflated of pride and admiration during which it distributed autographiées photographs and left all those which it wanted to take a photograph memory with him. “Common Walkabout not very which translates its generosity correctly”, said of him Yannick Lévesque by revealing that each player of the gaining team of the Stanley Cut had this trophy 24 hours. “The majority then organize meetings deprived with friends. François chose to devote more than 5 hours of this day to his area!” Area which of a block N, did not fail to applaud; has all to break when it concluded “It is not easy but I try to still bring back the Cut for you the next year!” Definitely, Sorelois like gaining them of this hardening!

Really slow news weekend

Not much going on this weekend. Just the usual rumors about Scott (which I will not link to), and a day with the Cup for Beauchemin - Link
