Anaheim Ducks news for Wednesday - Part 1, Non Game News

Just a little bit of non game news today.  Huskins gets more coverage about him and his first goal and the Ducks have some new wallpapers.

The OC Register has an article on Huskins as well as covering Marchant's and Bertuzzi's injures.

Around this time last year the NHL was still a dream for Kent Huskins. The defenseman had toiled in the minors for five years and wasn't showing much in his second training camp with the Ducks.

Coach Randy Carlyle, who coached Huskins with the AHL's Manitoba Moose, put it bluntly when asked what he saw in the previous two training camps.

"I saw that he couldn't play in the league," Carlyle said.

Now beginning his first full season in the NHL, Huskins is growing into the role of solid second-tier defenseman that the Ducks hoped he would assume when they signed him as a free agent in 2005.

His first NHL goal Monday gave him three points in eight games, which equals his point total in 33 games last season. And his confidence has grown since he was called up in December.

The LA Times has an interview with Huskins and an update on Marchant and Schneider

Kent Huskins hasn't had time to think about where he wants to put it, but he figures to keep a close eye on the puck he received Monday night.
Not only did the defenseman score his first NHL goal in the Ducks' 6-3 victory but it came against the Detroit Red Wings. And he put the puck past future Hall of Fame goalie Dominik Hasek.

"He's one of the best ever at that position," the soft-spoken Huskins said. "To sneak one by him makes it a little extra special."
Perhaps the biggest thing about the goal is that Huskins had the confidence to jump into the play without fear of making a mistake. That was something Coach Randy Carlyle didn't see during Huskins' initial training camps with the Ducks.
"For whatever reason, the two previous training camps . . . were terrible," said Carlyle, who also coached Huskins while with the Manitoba Moose of the American Hockey League. "And he can't explain that. He was at a loss to pinpoint why his performance in training camps were so poor.
"I was perplexed because I'd had him as a player in Manitoba and both he and Joe DiPenta played together there. And in a lot of ways, he was a higher-level player than Joe DiPenta and Joe DiPenta has played two years in the league here. You're wondering why, why, why."
The reasoning was simple. Huskins often pored over any mistake he made and it eventually affected his overall game. And with five years in the AHL, the window to make an impact was closing.
"You get to your fourth or fifth year and in your mind, it kind of becomes a do-or-die situation," Huskins, 28, said. "This might be my last chance. I've kind of learned since then to just take it shift to shift and just concentrate on working hard every time I'm out there."
Huskins earned a recall midway through last season when the Ducks' defensive corps was hit hard by injury. He impressed the brass with his solid play and his ability to carry the puck out of his zone but was eventually returned to the Portland Pirates, their minor-league team in Maine.

Anaheim Ducks News for Tuesday

In the shadow of last nights victory over the Red Wings, I bring you today's news.  I have an update on the injury situation via MVN, the winning name in the Name the rivalry contest is now up for vote and other miscellaneous news.

Injury update via MVN

In spite of this being the Ducks only “day off” between three games in four days, the Ducks nonetheless held a full practice. The Ducks practiced about 45 minutes and went through most of the usual drills. The players were in an upbeat mood, thanks to last night’s 6-3 win over Detroit. They are looking to carry that positive momentum into their game tomorrow night against the Nashville Predators.
Petteri Wirtanen benefitted the most from the practice. He was recalled from Portland to fill in the holes left by injuries to Todd Bertuzzi and Todd Marchant in Sunday’s game against the Wild. Coach Randy Carlyle said that Wirtanen is a Pahlsson-like player. He’s a solid, safe player, albeit young and still developing. Wirtanen was the best option available in Portland, especially as Ryan Carter has a groin strain and Jason King has also had a groin pull, not to mention that his wife is due any day now.

After the practice, updates were handed out on the injured players. Todd Bertuzzi is still having symptoms from his concussion. Until they subside, they cannot go to the next step in the process. That step is starting to work out and see if symptoms return. The league requires a minimum of one week being symptom free before being allowed to return.

Earl from BOC has a look the "The London Effect"

Well, it’s been a combined 10 games played since the Ducks and Kings split games in London, and of course results have been less than stellar: combined only two of those games have resulted in BoC wins, and both those wins came midway through the third period. Combined, the teams have been outscored 11-8 in the first period, 19-13 in the second period, and 19-14 in the third.

Now of course each of these teams has some issues outside of the London travel: the Ducks have been playing with an injury-compromised roster since day one, and the Kings are still trying to figure out how to work with their new lineup, from the net on out. But still, I think it’s clear that there is more going on here than bad rosters—between the shortened training camps and the intercontinental travel, King and Duck results have been adversely affected by the bizarre start to the season.

The name the rivalry contest is closer to a winner

Fans are voting now on a nickname for that great National Hockey League rivalry in the Los Angeles area ' and "Freeway Face-off" is the early leader.

Yes, it's that regional faceoff between the Los Angeles Kings and the 2007 Stanley Cup champion Anaheim Ducks. FSN West (Kings) and FSN Prime Ticket (Ducks) figured the six games the bitter rivals play each year merited a moniker along the lines of New York's Subway Series. So they asked fans to submit their selections online.

The first phase of the contest got started Sept. 29, the same day the Kings defeated the Ducks, 4-1, on neither team's ice: the match was played at the O2 Arena in London, England. The teams split a pair of matches by 4-1 scores, the NHL's first-ever games in London.

A Preview of the Ducks vs Wild

The Anaheim Ducks are the defending Stanley Cup champions while the Nashville Predators were one of the league's best teams last season. The first three weeks of 2007-08 have proven just how little that means now.

The Ducks look to continue their success against the Predators on Wednesday night when the teams open their season series at the Honda Center.

After splitting their first two games against the Los Angeles Kings in England, the Ducks (3-4-1) lost three straight before rebounding to win two of their last three contests.

Samuel Pahlsson snapped a tie with a short-handed goal midway through the third period Monday, leading Anaheim to a 6-3 victory over visiting Detroit.

The goal was the first of the season for Pahlsson, who missed the first five games while recovering from sports hernia surgery.

Chris Pronger and Ryan Getzlaf each had three assists for the Ducks, whose six goals matched their combined total from the previous four games.

Defenseman Kent Huskins opened the scoring 1:56 into the game with his first NHL goal.

"It was a great feeling," said Huskins, a sixth-round draft pick by Chicago in 1998 who played in 33 regular-season games and 21 playoff games for the Ducks in 2006-07. "Our team's been having some problems scoring some goals, so to be able to contribute like that felt pretty good."

An article on Kent Huskins from the Ducks official site

In less than one year’s time, Kent Huskins has gone from toiling in the minor leagues with a lack of self-confidence to a player firmly established on the Ducks.

A highlight of Huskins’ turnaround came on Monday night, as the 6-3 defenseman netted his first career goal on a wrister that hit Detroit’s Dominik Hasek’s shoulder and flipped into the net to give the Ducks a 1-0 lead in a game they would eventually win 6-3.

Huskins holds the puck from his first NHL goal.

“It was definitely a bit of a shock,” Huskins said after Tuesday’s practice. “Things happened pretty quickly out there. To see it flutter in was a great feeling.”

Overall, Huskins has played well this season, as he’s tied with Francois Beauchemin and Corey Perry for the best plus/minus rating on the team with +3.

Huskins’ solid play was something coach Randy Carlyle thought was possible when the team signed the defenseman as a free agent in 2005, but the results shown in the 2005 and 2006 training camps were not indicative of the player Carlyle had once previously coached.

“For whatever reason the two previous training camps he had with our hockey club (before this season) were terrible,” Carlyle said. “I had him in Manitoba (during the 2004-05 season). Both he and Joe DiPenta had played together there. In a lot of ways he was a higher level player than DiPenta and DiPenta has played two years in the league here.”

Huskins, along with Carlyle, searched for reasoning behind the lackluster camp performances.

“I was putting too much pressure on myself,” Huskins said. When you get into your fourth or fifth year as a pro, it becomes a do-or-die situation. You know this might be your last chance."

Anaheim Ducks News - Friday News

TGIF! Not because of the weekend but because the Stanley Cup Journal is updated with Kent Huskins and Joe DiPenta's day with Cup. George Parros had his day with the Cup today and I've got pics. I also have one more article from Ryan Shannon's day with the cup and the Ducks do good in Oxnard.

Stanley Cup Journal was updated today with Joe and Kent's day with the cup.

Joe DiPenta

The second that Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia is mentioned, hockey fans instaneously think of one person - Joe DiPenta, the first player to take the Stanley Cup there when he arrived with hockey's most cherished prize on Thursday, August 9.

Although born in Barrie, Ontario, DiPenta grew up in Cole Harbour and played his first hockey there. When it came time to make his plans for the Stanley Cup, there was no doubt where Joe was going to take it.

Joe fretted for several days, struggling with sleep as he worried about his day with the Cup. "I just worried that something was going to happen, that the flight was delayed or something and the Cup wouldn't show up on time."

All went as planned. The Stanley Cup arrived in Halifax late on Wednesday, August 8. Halifax International Airport is quite a bit north of the Nova Scotia capital, and it took almost half an hour to drive from the airport.

Kent Huskins

Friday, August 10 belonged to Kent Huskins, the Ducks' young rookie defenseman who hails from Almonte, Ontario, a historic town not far from Ottawa. Almonte is best known as the birthplace of James Naismith, the inventor of basketball, but after Kent made his NHL debut with the Ducks this season, Almonte became much more of a hockey town. Kent contributed to Anaheim's Stanley Cup victory over the Senators, much to the dismay of the local fans from Ottawa.

Handed the Stanley Cup at 10:30 that morning, Huskins took the trophy to his parents' home where professional photographs were taken. Kent's mother Bonnie and father Les couldn't have been more excited for their son.

A public celebration was scheduled next, so Kent took Lord Stanley's legacy to an area where a tent had been erected in the field behind Almonte's Civitan Hall. Kent witnessed an incredible turn-out, as he shared the Cup with almost 1,500 fans during the memorable afternoon. While there, Huskins spent time with a local sledge hockey team and a minor hockey team.

George Parros had his day with the Cup today. Here is an article

Former Randolph resident and current NHL defenseman George Parros brought the Stanley Cup to Delbarton this morning, displaying the trophy to old friends, faculty members and current students.

Parros, a former Delbarton hockey star who won the Stanley Cup this past season with the Anaheim Ducks, posed for pictures and signed autographs for two hours at his former alma mater.

Each member of a team that wins a Stanley Cup is given one full day to spend with the trophy and is permitted to with it whatever he wishes. Parros, now 28, made his Delbarton his first stop on a day long journey that includes appearances at Princeton University, from where he graduated in 2003, and in Pennsylvania.

“The best part of this is being able to come back and see people I haven’t seen in a long time,” Parros said. “And to have this with me is something special.”

The Anaheim Ducks do some good:

About a month ago, Oxnard Ice Center President Mike Paikin said the rink was going to close because of financial problems. Paikin of Sherman Oaks suggested then that the clubs could buy the business.

Both groups marshaled forces and surpassed their fundraising goal of $120,000 as of last weekend, Meaney said. Donations came from around the country, including a substantial contribution from the National Hockey League's Anaheim Ducks.

One more Ryan Shannon Article with picture:

DARIEN - Ryan Shannon had a good year.
The 24-year-old Darien native was called up by the NHL's Anaheim Ducks last year Ryan Shannon of the Anaheim Ducks carries the Stanley Cup into the Darien Ice Rink yesterday . . .after an impressive preseason, and he notched 2 goals and 9 assists during the regular season. But that was just the beginning.

"I went from playing in a minor league team, and then, in October, I found myself playing on an NHL team," Shannon said. "That was a dream come true. Then, to score my first NHL goal, that was unbelievable.

"I never thought it would get any better than that," he said.
But it did - Shannon and the Ducks won the Stanley Cup in June, and, as is tradition with NHL champions, each team member was given 24 hours with the storied trophy. Shannon spent his day with Lord Stanley's Cup yesterday.

Monday Evening Post

OK Duck Fans break out your wallet because there is another product for you to buy.  I have some analysis by the folks at ESPN and a little more on Kent Huskins day with the cup.

The Anaheim Ducks have released a tribute magazine to that:

"chronicles the Ducks' run to the Stanley Cup title. It features recaps of the regular season and every round of the Stanley Cup playoffs, with tons of photos from every game, the post game celebrations, on the road in Ottawa and more"

ESPN has some analysis on the outlook for the Ducks this season.

I don't want to cop out in the very first edition of "Better or Worse," but I really can't offer a definitive answer about the defending champs until we find out whether captain Scott Niedermayer is really going to retire.

If Niedermayer decides to hang up his skates (he says he's leaning toward retirement), the Ducks will be worse. You just don't replace a player like Niedermayer. There is no way they'll be better without him.

A nice article on Kent Huskins that I missed.

On the sixth of June, a rookie NHL defenceman named Kent Huskins, slightly incredulous, lifted the Stanley Cup over his head while standing on a frozen pond in Anaheim.

Two months later, Huskins is bringing the Cup home to Almonte, the proudest town in the Ottawa Valley.

It's summer festival time in Almonte, population 4,000, which means that the popular puppeteer show and the 3-on-3 Naismith street basketball tournament have some exclusive company this weekend.

m. tomorrow, Lord Stanley's silver mug is due to arrive at the airport in Ottawa, to be immediately whisked to the Huskins home in Almonte.

Monday Morning News

Well a few interesting items for you today. I have the Stanley Cup Schedule for this week courtesy of the OCRegister. Kent Huskins has his day with the cup, some more pictures from Andy's day with the cup, and a look at the cover of the 6 disc CD cover. I also found what looks to be Duck's staff having some fun with the cup and a look at the Bryzagalov situation by Varius of AnaheimDucks.info.

Stanley Cup Schedule for this week

1. Kent Huskins, Sunday

2. Shawn Thornton, Monday

3. Ric Jackman, Tuesday

4. Brad May, Wed.-Thu.

5. Coach Randy Carlyle, Fri.-Sat.

Kent Huskins has had his day with the cup:

It was quite easy to pick Kent Huskins out of the crowd yesterday.

He was the guy with the perennial grin and the shapely little date.

A defenceman with the NHL champion Anaheim Ducks, Huskins had possession of the three-foot, 35-lb. Stanley Cup from 10:30 a.m. until the wee hours of this morning.

NHL Stanley Cup Champions 2006-2007: Anaheim Ducks

Finally some Ilya Bryzgalov analysis from Varius

While there have been other hot Ducks’ topics taking precedence this summer (such as the Penner offer sheet and the potential retirement of both Selanne and Niedermayer), the Ducks have another key issue to resolve sooner rather than later.

Ducks’ GM Brian Burke has publicly stated that he feels backup goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov deserves a chance at starting. However with the new four-year deal given to Ducks’ goalie Jean-Sebastien Giguere earlier this summer, it will not be as a Duck. Burke also called Ilya very classy and a “stand up guy” about the entire situation. He said he is trying to find the right offer for Bryzgalov to accommodate his wishes.

The trouble is, there aren’t very many teams seeking to acquire a potential starter right now. So the question is, what does Burke do? He signed Swedish goaltender Jonas Hiller (who is unproven at the NHL level) to a rather expensive, bonus-laden contract.

Huskins and O'Donnell days with the cup

The Ottawa Senators didn't win the Stanley Cup this year, but the Cup will still spend two days in the region this week, thanks to two Anaheim Ducks hatched there.

The Ducks took Lord Stanley's trophy when they trounced the Senators in Game 5 of the 2007 NHL playoff finals in June.

Consequently, the Cup is scheduled to spend Sunday in Almonte, Ont., just west of Ottawa, hometown of Anaheim defenceman Kent Huskins.

It will also spend a day in his teammate Sean O'Donnell's hometown of Kanata, which is now part of Ottawa.

A nice article on Brian Burke from the Vancouver Sun

Despite being unceremoniously dumped by the Vancouver Canucks and leading his new team, the Anaheim Ducks, to a Stanley Cup championship Brian Burke watches his team practise April 30 at GM Place.last season, our fair-but-fickle city will always draw Brian Burke back.

"This will be home when I get done working in hockey, but hopefully that's not for awhile," Burke told The Vancouver Sun Friday after addressing the B.C. Chamber of Commerce's executive luncheon in the Fairmont Waterfront Hotel.

"We hope that we'll be there [Anaheim] for 10 more years," Burke said. "We're going to be there as long as the owners want us to be there."
