Monday News - Part 2, The Rookie Games

So, I actually got to go to the second rookie game and I was going to do a nice little post on it, then I realized I missed a part of it as I had baby duty (my wife is as big of a hockey fan as I am) and that AnaheimDuckFan had already done a nice write up on both games.  So here are a few snippets from her coverage and MVN's analysis of game one.  One cool side not was that Brad May and Teemu Selanne were at the games.

Torrey Mitchell and Logan Couture scored goals as the San Jose Sharks defeated the Anaheim Ducks 2-1 Saturday night in a Rookie Game in front of a capacity crowd (approximately 700) at Anaheim ICE.
Andy Schneider scored the Anaheim goal 8:59 into the third period to cut the deficit to 2-1. Timo Pielmeier stopped 29-of-30 shots for San Jose to earn the win. Gerald Coleman made 19 stops for the Ducks.
Schneider's goal came with a man advantage. The defenseman's slap shot from the point deflected off a Sharks defender, beating Pielmeier on his stick side. Bobby Ryan and Brendan Mikkelson assisted on the tally.

MVN Covergage of game one

In front of a fully packed Anaheim Ice, the Ducks and Sharks prospects took to the ice for game one of a two game series. The Ducks prospects have been attending their own training camp since Thursday in anticipation of these games. No doubt several of them want to capture the attention of the Ducks staff so they can stay a bit longer in Anaheim when the big boys take the ice on Tuesday at the start of the main training camp.

The Ducks started out with Gerald Coleman in goal, Brian Salcido and Brendan Mikkelson on defense and Drew Miller, Jason Bailey and Ryan Carter up front. The Sharks starting line up included top prospects Devin Setoguchi and Logan Couture and saw Timo Pielmeier in goal. More on Pielmeier later. Other Ducks lines were Bobby Ryan, Eric Tangradi and Andrew Ebbett; Bobby Bolt, Brett Morrison and Ryan Dingle; Matt Christie, Bryce Swan and Matt Beleskey. The other defense pairings were Andy Schneider and Adrian Veideman; Brett Festerling and John DeGray; Steve Birnstill rotated in as well.

The first period saw plenty of chances for the Ducks who had three power play opportunities, including one long 5 on 3. Although the Ducks were getting their chances and getting shots on goal, Pielmeier was successful at stopping all of them. The Ducks gave up two power plays in the first period and although Coleman did not see as many shots as Pielmeier, Coleman also did his job well so that the period ended 0-0.

Game Two Coverage

For the second straight night the Ducks rookies fell short of the Sharks, this time 3-1 in Game 2 of the Rookie Games at Anaheim ICE.
Eric Tangradi actually got the Ducks on the board first, on a one-timer 2:44 into the first period, with a nice assist from behind the net by Matt Christie. Tangradi, who hails from Philadelphia, was the Ducks' second pick in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft. But Tangradi's goal was all the Ducks would get, as San Jose came back with two in the first period and another in the second. San Jose's Torrey Mitchell and Like Fritshaw had goals at 8:02 and 9:29 in the second, and Logan Couture (their first-round pick in the NHL Entry Draft) added a power play marker at 4:37 into the second. San Jose's Tyson Sexsmith earned the win in net, making 30 saves.
